SHENZHEN, CHINA — Either because of corruption or simple negligence, officials chose to ignore the 380,000 square metres of construction debris that towered over the outskirts of one of the most populous cities in China. That is, until everything came crashing down on Sunday, when a massive wave of mud and construction debris blanketed 33 buildings and scores of people who were unable to escape fast enough. According to officials at the Ministry of Land and Resources, the incident was not a natural landslide. Instead, a mound of construction waste on a hill in Shenzhen's outskirts toppled over and collapsed, sending a mudslide down the length of the hill that crashed into the buildings below. Several years ago, the location of the landslide was a quarry. But because dumpsites were neede...
SHENZHEN, CHINA — A building site on a US$45 billion construction project, located in Shenzhen's Qianhai district in China collapsed last week. The dramatic video captured by workers at the site shows the building site slowly collapsing. No injuries were reported from the incident, the Telegraph reported. Sources quoted in local media said the collapse was reportedly caused by soft soil around the site, according to the Telegraph. The project is part of a planned international finance and commercial district, some are calling the Manhattan of the Pearl River Delta. The Chinese government hopes it will rival and, even replace, Hong Kong's Central District. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on...
SHENZHEN, CHINA — At least 91 people are missing after a landslide hit an industrial park in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen on Sunday, according to state-run news agency Xinhua. China's Public Security Bureau's firefighting unit said an area of of 20,000 square metres was covered with soil after the landslide. Some 1,500 workers are helping rescue efforts, according to a comment the Guangming New Area Government posted on its official page on the Sina Weibo micro-blogging site. So far, there has been no official report on the number of fatalities, if any. Ren Jiguang, the deputy chief of Shenz...

Views on South University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) have been divided on whether to consider it a rebel or a contributor to the Chinese educational system. The Shenzhen-based university operates differently than other colleges, with English as the official language on campus and the ability of the administration to process students’ applications individually. The university made headlines when five years ago, 45 high school students across China rejected the National College Entrance Examination, showing support to the then-newly-built SUSTech. What has the university done during the past years? What goals has it met? CCTVNEWS revisited SUSTech to find out about the journey of the university that has been surrounded with controversy.
